OBJECTIVE: 8-2.3 Quotient of Powers and 8-2.4 Negative Exponents Properties. Students will be able to simplify algebraic expressions containing negative exponents. Students will be able to simplify algebraic expressions containing quotients of powers. Students will be able to apply the rules of exponents for both of these properties. Students will be able to utilize the MathTV website for a review of how to solve problems involving exponents in a review.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS: Students will understand what exponents are and the rules for using exponents. Students will understand the difference between positive and negative exponents, and their effect on the base. Students will understand what algebraic fractions are and how to work with them.

DO NOW: Selected Questions taken from Spiral Review, Open Ended Test Prep and Logical Thinking

ACTIVITIES: Do Now, Review homework, Notes and Examples. Students will incorporate what they already know about exponents to assist them in understanding how negative exponents and quotients of expressions with exponents work, and how to simplify these types of expressions. Create a chart on the overhead with powers of 2, including positive, zero, and negative exponents. Students will use calculators to evaluate each power. Emphasize to them that anything that is less than 1 needs to be written as a fraction in simplest form. Then ask the students if they notice a pattern with the positive and negative exponents. Let this lead into the lesson and rules about applying negative exponents. Discuss the definition of reciprocal and the role this plays with negative exponents. Applying the quotient of powers rule is a 2-step process. First we have to isolate the fraction part, and simplify that like any other fraction. Once completed now look at the variable part, and apply the rules from the quotient of powers property. For each variable the student needs to ask the self, where are there more, and how many more.

Teacher will create a playlist of problems that the students need to complete. Teacher can also make a hard copy in Word of the problems students need to complete as part of the MathTV activity. Students can log into MathTV to watch the problems as they are completed and can also complete them ahead of time and review along with the MathTV teacher of their choice. Students will work through the set of questions under Algebra, Exponents, Division with Exponents. There are 9 questions in this section to be completed with the teachers online.

Vocabulary: Reciprocal
